James O'Melia

Congratulations to Mallory Hudnall, Gabe Mahn, and Avian Thomas on being named the 2026 recipients of the James O’Melia, Jr. Awards.

The James O'Melia, Jr. Award is Rock Island High School's highest athletic honor, created in memory of Jim O’Melia, who tragically drowned on May 27, 1981. Each year, a committee selects one male and one female senior athlete who best embody the values Jim exemplified: athleticism, leadership, honesty, sportsmanship, and character. Nominations can come from coaches or community members, and the committee carefully reviews each candidate. The award celebrates scholars who reflect the very best of the school and community.

This year, there was a tie in the voting for the male recipient, resulting in two outstanding honorees being selected on the boys’ side.
