The fourth annual READY TO ROCK the School Year Back to School Bash in Schwiebert Park on Sunday, July 29 was a great success!
Rock Island Academy teacher Rita Jett served as the emcee for the day. Superintendent Dr. Mike Oberhaus and City of Rock Island Mayor Mike Thoms kicked off the event with a welcome message and then the ROCKs Cheerleaders performed a couple of chants to get the crowd going. Metro Youth Drill Team performed and the Rock Island High School ROCK Orchestra also played a few selections to highlight their upcoming season.
The Rock Island-Milan Booster Club served up hotdogs, chips and water for close to 2,000 people! One highlight of the afternoon was when the Bikers for Backpacks roared into Schwiebert Park to mark their school supply donation from the day’s motorcycle ride. Overall, the BIKERS donated 255 backpacks and hundreds of school supply items! The ride also brought in $600 that will go toward purchasing supplies.
"It was a great afternoon for students to come down to Schwiebert Park and say hello to their principal and get excited about starting school on August 2," said Dr. Oberhaus. "I hope that everyone has a great school year!"
