RIHS government students get a lesson on courts from federal judge

Just like in court, Rock Island High School government students all rose to the feet as Chief Judge Sara Darrow walked out, dressed in her judges robe.

Judge Darrow is a Chief United States district judge of the United States District Court for the Central District of Illinois. She stopped by Rocky on Wednesday, April 19 to speak to students.

She explained the difference between federal and state court, what kind of cases go to state and federal court, she talked about criminal and civil cases, naturalization ceremonies and much more.

Judge Darrow also told students how she became a judge. When she was sworn in, she was the youngest federal judge at the time.

She also told students to be open to opportunities and make a path for yourself and have faith in yourself.

"So many people are going to say no to you, so never say no to yourself. If I had listened to all those no's I wouldn't be where I am today," said Judge Darrow.
